Apply Inherently Safer Design Concepts to Existing Facilities

Inherently safer design concepts are not just for the design phase. These concepts can be applied to plants throughout their entire lifecycle. Applying the concepts of ISD to chemical processes has been shown to reduce not only the risk of process safety incidents but also the costs of manufacturing, while improving operability. These concepts can be, and have been, applied successfully to existing plants and processes. This article reviews some real-world examples and discusses ISD strategies.
