30 Years of AcuTech: Where we are Now
This year, AcuTech celebrates a rich history of 30 years of process risk management. To commemorate this milestone, we had a discussion with David Moore, Founder, CEO, and President of AcuTech and are publishing a series of blog posts. Join us as we dive into our history, present, future growth, and memorable anecdotes.
In our next installment, we explore AcuTech’s present, examining shifts in process safety, risk management, and security since its inception. We delve into the company’s adaptability, client-focused evolution, and what distinguishes AcuTech in the industry, along with the excitement surrounding current projects.
The Changing Landscape of Process Safety
When established in 1994, AcuTech was an early entrant in the field of process safety. At that time, US regulations for process safety management (PSM) had only recently emerged. Many clients needed to understand how to achieve process safety, and needed an introduction to the first principles of PSM. As regulatory drivers forced a broader effort, AcuTech introduced the concepts to many companies.
Following the BP Texas City incident in 2005, the industry was inspired to closely examine how process safety is more than technical. It was beginning to be seen as a living management system with leadership challenges and its own culture that had to be managed. AcuTech became instrumental in pioneering culture enhancements, management and boardroom leadership awareness, and organizational change projects to take PSM to another level.
Over the past 30 years, stakeholders views of process safety evolved, and they began to recognize PSM as a critical component of enterprise risk management. It became the subject of more national and international regulations. Voluntary organizations, like CCPS and EPSC, have done much to promote PSM globally. Their work is influencing many firms to self-adopt the principles. The Environmental, Social and Governance sustainability movement has positioned PSM as an essential element of achieving those goals. Industry, their stakeholders, investors, the public, boards of directors, and governments all are demanding high performance.
Much like what we saw in the early 2000s, we are currently experiencing the next evolution of PSM. As we move forward, a growing number of companies around the world are recognizing the advantages of PSM, with potential breakthroughs anticipated as we continue to integrate both management and engineering sciences into PSM.
